This can include noticeable gaps in their work history, frequent job and employer changes, lower wages than their civilian counterparts and substantial underemployment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-18908 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hireheroesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Special-Facebook-Post-300-\u00d7-300-px-1-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"314\" height=\"314\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hireheroesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Special-Facebook-Post-300-\u00d7-300-px-1.png 300w, https:\/\/www.hireheroesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Special-Facebook-Post-300-\u00d7-300-px-1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.hireheroesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Special-Facebook-Post-300-\u00d7-300-px-1-100x100.png 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 314px) 100vw, 314px\" \/>Six years ago, after a PCS move landed my family in North Carolina, I found myself struggling with these exact challenges. With several years of HR experience and a Master\u2019s degree, I didn\u2019t think I would have a hard time finding a job in my new city\u2026\u00a0 Boy, was I wrong! <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One month of searching quickly turned into six months of unemployment. As a career-focused individual, those six months were some of the worst of my life. I felt drained and discouraged after applying to multiple jobs each day with few responses and going on interviews that ended in rejection. Like most military spouses, I didn\u2019t want to work solely for the financial benefits. I <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also to grow as a professional, gain new skills and build community with co-workers.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around the fifth month of unemployment, I dragged myself to a job fair where I first interacted with a Hire Heroes USA representative. She encouraged me to register for the free career services they offered, and I went home and signed up the same day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was contacted by my Transition Specialist, Marshall, who dove right in to help revise my resume and teach me how to effectively search for a job. Turns out, I was doing it all wrong. When I implemented his suggestions, the job leads started coming in. In fact, thanks to these new resources, I networked my way into a role at the Hire Heroes USA North Carolina office as a full-time employee later that year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2018,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I established the Hire Heroes USA\u2019s Serving Spouses Program and have personally<img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-18904 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hireheroesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Serving-Spouses-vertical-copy-300x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"364\" height=\"182\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hireheroesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Serving-Spouses-vertical-copy-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/www.hireheroesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Serving-Spouses-vertical-copy-1024x512.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.hireheroesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Serving-Spouses-vertical-copy-768x384.png 768w, https:\/\/www.hireheroesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Serving-Spouses-vertical-copy-600x300.png 600w, https:\/\/www.hireheroesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Serving-Spouses-vertical-copy.png 1250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 364px) 100vw, 364px\" \/>\u00a0helped more than 1,000 military spouses and veterans find meaningful employment. Every day, I get to teach my clients job-seeking tips, those very tips I learned while I was unemployed:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>1) <\/strong>If you aren\u2019t sure what you want to do, you need to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mytrak.hireheroesusa.org\/s\/share-media?&vtui__mediaId=a6C0z000000bxsp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">narrow that down<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before you start job seeking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>2)<\/strong> Job seeking is all about who you know \u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hireheroesusa.secure.force.com\/publicresources\/apex\/scormanywhere__SCORM_Player?aZlfyjp7bOmsEMHy2h9JVPUxGwxS6GlHgAsCpB6w19KwqQ7QGdgA%2BJUpE641R8sM&iospref=web&publicLink=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NETWORK NETWORK NETWORK<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and ask for informational interviews.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>3)<\/strong><\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/mytrak.hireheroesusa.org\/s\/share-media?&vtui__mediaId=a6C0z000000XhhC\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LinkedIn profiles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> give you access to almost every recruiter and hiring manager; make sure you complete your profile and engage regularly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>4)<\/strong> If you aren\u2019t <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mytrak.hireheroesusa.org\/s\/share-media?&vtui__mediaId=a6C0z000000Xhls\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tailoring your resume<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you are wasting your time!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>5)<\/strong> Do your research before you interview with an organization. Come <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hireheroesusa.secure.force.com\/publicresources\/apex\/scormanywhere__SCORM_Player?ea%2B94%2B6mNasWwVSLpKk%2FfAbSsx6vy3g0V4NY4HawWi0luQNIl2P8PDj7kBTvb4BQ&iospref=web&publicLink=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prepared for interviews<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and ask questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>6)<\/strong> Stay <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/huntr.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">organized<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and take time for yourself to avoid job-seeking burnout.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>7)<\/strong> If your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/job-search-101-lets-talk-voicemails-kelly-grivner-kelly-mba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voicemail<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isn\u2019t set up or full \u2013 how can hiring managers leave you a message?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>8)<\/strong> Always be professional and kind; don\u2019t burn any bridges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>9)<\/strong> Google yourself \u2013 clean up your social presence and develop your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mytrak.hireheroesusa.org\/s\/share-media?vtui__mediaId=a6C0z000000Xhh2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">professional brand<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>10)<\/strong> Don\u2019t ever become stagnant in your job search.
