I have heard the good, bad and ugly of moving through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hireheroesusa.secure.force.com\/publicresources\/apex\/scormanywhere__SCORM_Player?FtrEyVtDNpn4iWKomGXzpRBnY32KJe3Yq1YHc5ZECsqAusX6t5qzkDiXe3kkxJ4f&iospref=web&publicLink=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">federal application process<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I\u2019m here to share my experience and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hireheroesusa.org\/5-tips-for-federal-employment-success\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">best practices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for searching for federal jobs as both a military spouse and Federal Employment Specialist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Understand the Process<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s look at some of the challenges when it comes to seeking federal employment as a military spouse. First, you must understand that you have to be confident in yourself and not lose hope when you do not get the response you are looking for initially. Start with understanding the process of federal positions. This means looking through the information that is provided for military spouses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19907 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hireheroesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/fed_jobs_blog.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hireheroesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/fed_jobs_blog.png 500w, https:\/\/www.hireheroesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/fed_jobs_blog-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federal agencies <\/span><b>can<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use the military spouse non-competitive hiring process to fill positions on either a temporary or permanent basis. Agencies <\/span><b>are not obligated to pick a military spouse as a candidate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Always make sure that you are supplying the information that is needed based on the eligibility category you fall in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>That can mean you are eligible if you are:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; A spouse of an active duty member of the armed forces<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; A spouse of a service member who is 100% disabled due to a service-connected injury at the time of separation from military service<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; A spouse of a service member killed while on active duty<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a military spouse remarries, that eligibility is eliminated (unless that spouse marries another active duty member). You must still apply and meet qualification standards and additional requirements, such as a background investigation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Target Your Resume & Application<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest myth about writing a federal resume is to include your whole life story on your resume!\u00a0 Most hiring managers don't want to read a resume that is 10-12 pages.\u00a0 You need to craft your resume to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hireheroesusa.secure.force.com\/publicresources\/apex\/scormanywhere__SCORM_Player?rmFdSyXxwZW2ZYsWuwb0b6LmD7u%2BUZn9lJzZOAt%2BH4uVEf81YjktqZlq24u4Hbp3&iospref=web&publicLink=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">align with the required qualifications and experiences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the hiring organization is looking for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Here are some tips:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.) Read <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the entire job announcement. Make sure you focus on the following sections to help you understand whether or not you qualify for the position:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\" aria-level=\"1\">&#8211; <b>Duties<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><b>Qualifications<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\" aria-level=\"1\">&#8211; <b>How to Apply<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(including a preview of the assessment questionnaire, if applicable)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\" aria-level=\"1\">&#8211; <b>How You Will be Evaluated<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.) Make sure you have the required experience and\/or education <\/span><b>before <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you apply for the position. Hiring agencies use the job announcement to describe the job and the required qualifications that may include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\" aria-level=\"1\">&#8211; Level and amount of experience<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\" aria-level=\"1\">&#8211; Education<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\" aria-level=\"1\">&#8211; Training<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3.) Tailor your resume based on the required qualifications. When looking at federal jobs it is often required that you have the experience in a particular type of work for a certain period of time. That means you must show your skills and experiences and meet the qualifications and requirements that are listed in the job announcement to be considered for that particular job. You want to include important contact information:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\" aria-level=\"1\">&#8211; Address\u00a0<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\" aria-level=\"1\">&#8211; Email\u00a0<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\" aria-level=\"1\">&#8211; Phone Number<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4.) For the position, make sure you include dates, hours and level of experience:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Start and end dates (including the month and year)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; The number of hours you worked per week (HR wants to know if it was FT or PT)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; The level and amount of experience\u2014for instance, whether you served as a project manager or a team member helps to illustrate your level of experience<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Examples of relevant experiences and accomplishments that prove you can perform the tasks at the level required for the job as stated in the job announcement. Your experience needs to address every required qualification.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The federal application process can seem overwhelming and difficult. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are plenty of resources and valuable information to help military spouses navigate the federal process.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Previously, I had applied for over 30 federal jobs and it wasn\u2019t until I decided to fully engage in the process that I received a job offer. Make sure to follow the tips in this article, provide the necessary paperwork and do not give up.
